Good post although I would agree with "element". Coldcut may have brought some attention to Eric B & Rakim in the UK clubs but they had a large following stateside among the hardcore hip-hop fan before and after the Coldcut remix.

Also, it should be noted that the version of Paid in full that you have that corresponds the album cover is the Derek B remix and is not on the LP.

Ive got to respond to this old post.

quote.

"In 1987, Eric B. & Rakim were on a standstill and not going anywhere in the charts until ColdCut remixed their track Paid In Full which was absolutely incredible, filled with chopped samples that were pieced/scratched together ColdCut style"
.
.
.

Eric b & rakim were a succesful hardcore underground hip hop duo prior to this remix . Mainstream radio never had time for hardcore hip hop in any decade.

i was learning to dj & thought it was clever mix then i read a interview with rakim in mixmag magazine 1987 where he said it was a piece of %&^& & it changed my view.

The coldcut paid in full remix was an innovative piece as sampling was a fairly new technique in the late 80s & copyright laws were vague for the emerging dj producers .. But coldcut & the record label never paid attention to the artist in the remix... just listen to the lyrics..

Rakim is rapping about getting paid & how he used to be a criminal .Yet his verses are immersed in arabic chanting & vocal snippets & the video is even worse.

If this track was a commercial flop no one would be surprised as the remix comprised the image & artistry of the group...

It's ironic that Coldcut were originally an underground group who helped commercialize a underground artist. went mainstream & reverted back to underground.

I remember that I was at Our Price record store in the Fall of 1987. While I was going the records at the 12-inch section, Paid In Full (ColdCut remix) went on the store's stereo. The second I heard Ofra Haza's "Im Nin Alu" vocal samples, I dropped everything and just stood there under the speaker ..... just staring at it .... and listening to the rest of the track. I WAS HOOKED. Then I ran to the back and asked "who the [F] this track was and I NEED IT NOW!"
