In my 30+ years of collecting music, I completely forgot that I had this track in my arsenal of 12″ records.  I do not even remember buying this record at all.  A few days ago I was going through my record collection, looking for another track …but along the way I came upon this Jeopardy 12″.  Thus I reacted with such enthusiasm as if I’d just discovered/heard the track for the very first time.  Perhaps my elder brother was the one who bought it in 1983, no?  I do not know for sure; I do not recall.  Nonetheless, I love the song.  It has been YEARS since I’ve listened to Jeopardy.  The record was very dirty.  I cleaned it up as much as possible, recorded it straight into Protools and did as much mastering to it as I could.  I utilized Waves’ R-EQ4 equalizers, Waves R-CompressorsLexicon Vintage Plate Reverb and Waves L3 ultra-maximizer software/digital plugins …in order to enhance the sonics and widen the stereo-field of Jeopardy (both sides/versions of the record).  Great, timeless track from 1983 when it was first released.  It reached only #2 spot, just under Michael Jackson’s Thriller single being #1 in the top-10 music charts at that time.

Hashmoder's "STABBING BASSLINE" Stamp Of AprovalSunday morning, November 14, 2010:   I was walking on Baker Street in Nelson, British Columbia.  All the retail shops were closed except for this particular one which was not supposed’ve been open till 11-am: Urban Legends. I walked in.  Ok, so this store supposedly has over 10,000 new-&-used records.  As I was going through the bin of limited number of 12″ singles, I just happened to find (to my utter surprise and disbelief) this amazing record — unopened and brand spanking new (still wrapped) 12″ single of Dead Or Alive‘s 1985 worldwide hit track You Spin Me Round (Murder Mix). I have been looking for this record since 1987.  I regretted not buying it on 12″ in 1985 when the track was in the charts and stores.  And since then, I’ve searched high and low for it in the Americas, Caribbean and Europe …but no avail.  However, twenty-three years later –of all the places and time in this world & era– there it was in my hands — from a small record store in a small town:  Nelson, British Columbia!  It was meant to happen.  I was supposed to have left Nelson the previous day (Saturday) and driven back home to Vancouver.  I had no reason to stay an extra day in Nelson; I didn’t know why.  When I woke up that Sunday morning, I was craving bacon and eggs.  So I had a good morning brunch at the Hume Hotel. After brunch and full-stomach, I decided to walk-off the heavy meal by window-shopping on Baker Street.  Next thing I know was that I was standing in front of Urban Legends store which was open.  I walked in… less than five minutes later this 12″ was in my hand.  Talk about good KARMA!

Once I got back home to Vancouver the following Monday, I ran to my studio to play this record.  Oh man… THE BASSLINES.  This is one of Stock, Aitken & Waterman most successful international hits of all time.  There’s a good reason why this track still stands the test of time.  Spin Me Round (Like A Record) (Murder Mix) receives my Stabbing Bassline Stamp-Of-Approval.

Hashmoder's "STABBING BASSLINE" Stamp Of AprovalYou want rolling basslines?  Then this old but AMAZING synth-house track is for you.  Sixteenth-notes of multi-tap-delayed bassline sequences.  Shakers.  Roland TR-909 kicks and hi-hats.  Other synth pads that are gated in 16th-note steps.  I get the goosebumps every time I listen to this track.  Play this track in your car and drive somewhere with nice visual surrounding.  Or play it at home by standing dead-center between two beefy speakers …close your eyes …and allow your mind and ears to be driven.

Havana‘s Disorder has gotten my Stabbing Bassline Stamp-Of-Approval since 1994 …and I still haven’t revoked it yet :)

Hashmoder's "STABBING BASSLINE" Stamp Of AprovalOver The Shoulder is one incredible track (by Ministry) that was way ahead of its time.  Rolling, pounding synth bassline — sequenced with 16TH-notes across the 4/4 bar/measure timescale.  Industrial clinging & clanging sounds.  It was this track which first exposed me to industrial music after watching the music video.  I was like What the ‘F’ …and… What kind of music is that?

To me, I loved those industrial hard-edged sounds over a dance groove.  I was glad to be introduced to the industrial genre not only because it was new and harder core with metal/guitar elements but also because it had electronic drum machines, synthesizers, stuttering voice/word samples, machine grinds, and overly-precessed vocals.

Therefore… Over The Shoulder gets my Stabbing Basslines stamp of approval.
