Like the name of the label suggests, ColdCut were ahead of their time. In Summer of 1987 when I moved back to England to start grade-11 highschool at ACS Hillingdon, on the very day my plane touched down at Heathrow airport, the first thing I did was go down to Our Price record store in Uxbridge, Buckinghamshire, and looked for hiphop records. Going through all the singles in the 12-inch section, I came across ColdCut’s Beats + Pieces …. there was something magical about this record when I touched it, even though I had no clue who ColdCut were and what they sounded like. I took the risk to invest and bought the record among others. Once I played the Beats + Pieces at home, I was BLOWN AWAY.  Just what I was looking for.  Something cutting-edge with samples and loops pieced and scratched together on top of a tight main beat/loop sampled from Led_Zeppelin‘s track Kashmir. Ever since that day, I’ve been a religious follower and fan of ColdCut.

Coldcut vs. Eric B. Rakim — Not Paid Enough…

In 1987, Eric B. & Rakim were on a standstill and not going anywhere in the charts until ColdCut remixed their track Paid In Full which was absolutely incredible, filled with chopped samples that were pieced/scratched together ColdCut style. The most famous vocal used in that remix was from Ofra Haza‘s Yemenite Im Nin Alu track (the original LP version from her Fifty Gates Of Wisdom album, released in 1984), which then catapulted Ofra Haza back to the top-10 music charts followed by her smash-hit remix of Im Nin Alu in Summer 1988.

All in all, it was the doing and the genius of ColdCut to come up with such beautiful and timeless remix of Paid In Full …. bringing Eric B. Rakim to the top of the music charts and also making Ofra Haza one of the most internationally famous/successful singers in the world (she even did most of the vocal soundtracks for Steven Spielberg’s The Prince Of Egypt animated movie). At the end of the day, ColdCut never received as much credit as they deserved. In 1989, ColdCut released an album with an instrumental version Not Paid Enough.

I tip my hat for ColdCut.
They deserve a standing ovation.

What a gem this track is. Summer 1988 …. What’s On Your Mind comes out …. one of my all-time favorite retro electropop tracks by Information Society. The Latin Rascals did killer job in editing the club-mix version, and by such editing (especially in the breakdown) was very difficult to do at that time when there was no Protools; the only digital-audio multitrack recording/editing that could be done at that time was on very expensive proprietary systems such as the Synclavier (also read my other blog post here) or Fairlight CMI. It’s amazing how this track still stands the test of time. Brilliant production nonetheless. A lot of gating and stuttering effects. Automation wizardry.

musto & bones

Tommy Musto and Frankie Bones collaborated on this track back in 1990. It was successful in the club and radio/mainstream charts all over North America (USA & Canada) and Europe (mainly UK, France, Germany). Good buzzy bassline. 4/4 house groove. Hip/Rap House with huge emphasis on the the club-sound.

Lyrics…

I know a girl by the name of Rita
light skinned Puerto Rican, I call (MIRA)
the way she moves i can’t ignore
shes a porno flick on the dance floor

twistin churnin drips of sweat
a little bass thump, rita’s wet
once she’s thru fellas flock to her
girls (CLAP) while the beat just rocks her side to side
the beat goes boom
the new jack is up sayin give me some room
once again rita’s ready a smile on her face
the crowd breaks north givin rita space
big butt movin’ (In A) strokin’ pattern
the crowd made a circle like the ring around saturn
as for the new jack he just consumed
his body mutilated like he just been chewed

she’s dangerous on the dance floor x4

huff puff (BLOW) down the house
the latin in satin make the big butt bounce
swing left to right and right to left
the video venus dont miss a step
she wears leather and lace, a skirt made of satin
you like her, ya love her, (To) love the loose latin
on and on she’ll never stop
its party time an she wants to rock
one by one her buttons drop
little wiggle in the middle
no more top
the bassline (THUMPS), rita jumps
she humps pumps (AND) bumps those chumps
fellas flock (THERE) 3 or 4
2 of em leave cant take no more
always ready rita’s (RATED) triple x
on the dance floor shes havin sex
takin em on two at a time
her lips her hips (AND) her big behind
what’s this (FRENCH KISS) ‘excuse me miss’
rita’s not havin it
‘but i insist either bust a move or move your butt’
your breasts your chest or your big ol butt

back to rita and the dance floor porn
shakin it shakin it all night long
keep it up dance
how long can u last?
the tempo’s fast
shake that ass
move it move it every position
flow go, no intermission
the crowd is drawn
fellas droolin
girls can you do what rita’s doin?
ho style loose n wild
her style (MEANWHILE) youll smile at (YOUR F.M.) dial

she’s dangerous on the dance floor

guys stop to watch the x-rated dance
some (ASHAMED BY THE STANCE) in (THEIR) pants
your heart stops, mouth drops, pulse is weak
pant like a dog from the body heat
she wore butt huggers
they were snug as a bug
my advice to the brothas
wear Jimmy (IN CLUBS)
no one can chill cuz they all attracted
to her over the shoulder boulder (HOLDER)
strapped (ON) her back end
back to reality back to life
back to the (FEATURE OF FRIDAY NIGHT)
hurt me hurt me (WORDS TO THE WISE)
people cant party its no surprise
dont slip dont trip just hold yer grip
she’s rita go see her she’s fully-equipped
goin round n round
up and down
stompin her feet
against the ground
guys eyes glued to her thighs
(ROCKED WITH THIGHS) 9 inches high
the latin in satin some call (A) stripper
shoulda zigged but ya zagged
and ya broke ya zipper
always ready ritas ready givin ya more
shes not at ya local video store

she’s dangerous on the dance floor

bass’s (FELT) bouncin off the wall
rita wont (DROP) cuz she’s havin a ball
this urban queen rules the hip house scene
lean mean full of steam
breakin all back standin on the block
in the middle of the dance floor youll get rocked
rita’s rugged
leave her alone
she get you on the bone
send you home
porno flick her performin’ art
on the mark rita’s ready to start
move smooth in the groove
rita will prove she’s in the mood
dirty (DANCIN) she does it best
6 feet under is where you’ll rest
6 and 9 on (HER) behind
just like fine wine she improves with time

from dawn to dusk she’ll do it all night
i hope u can see her this friday night
but if you cant dont get uptight
(YO SUPERIOR NOISE ON IT )with the mic at night
crank it crank it pump that bass
rita’s wearin leather n lace
big butt swingin from left to right
drippin n strippin on a friday night
she rita go see her
light skinned mira
times runnin on your meter
so meet her, Rita
move me move me rita moans
dont dance alone work it to the bone
if youre lucky she’ll take ya home
to (HER) penthouse apartment (OR HER CRIB IN ROME)
feel the s&m
on your fm
if you can’t see her
where have you been?
it’s a groove me move me movie
starring rita and her booty
yours truly
P.C.P.
who could ask for more
she’s dangerous on the dance floor

she’s dangerous on the dance floor x4

Tommy Musto - Wired - Beat Drum

I remember this track being different from all the rest. Tommy Musto raised the bar when it came to hard, punchy, rolling melodic bassline in this track which blends 4/4 House-beat and Freestyle elements. Although the date printed on the 12-inch says 1987, this track was originally released in 1986. The record you see in the picture above is a 1987 re-issue.

Tommy Musto - Movement - The Movement

In 1986, this track by Tommy Musto set the standards high in electronic dance music. It stands on its own plateau. Hard, punchy and melodic synth bassline grooves the track raw and core. Electric, chorused piano chops add serious emotional value. Blend of 4/4 house beat and freestyle.

Soul II Soul Keep On Moving

Soul II Soul — my all-time favorite (and dearest to my heart) British electric soul music group in my life. I was in senior year high-school (ACS Hillingdon, UK) when Soul-II-Soul’s Keep On Movin’ 12-inch and maxi-CD singles were released in the first quarter of 1989 — the year when I bought everything released by them: 7-inch and 12-inch records; maxi-single cassettes and CD’s; and LP vinyl, cassette and CD of Soul-II-Soul first album release Club Classics Vol-1. In 1999, I’ve purchased Soul-II-Soul re-release of the first album which was re-mastered as Club Classics Vol-1, 10th Anniversary Edition and included extra/bonus tracks. The very beautiful Caron Wheeler was featured to do the main vocals on this track. Her soulful voice was so electrifyingly smooth which won her a Grammy.

Keep On Movin’ was my high-school track  ….. it meant a lot to me …… still means a lot to me twenty years later ….. moves me in almost every way ….. and forever remains to be my favorite track in my life.

To all my high-school friends (Gudnyn A, Noel D, Lisa C, Tom K, Tamer, Alex, Fadi, Giselle T, and everybody else), students I’ve known, students I didn’t know, teachers (shout-out to you Rich Hein), staff, headmaster (Mr. Duncan) … including all names I didn’t mention …… I dedicate this post + Soul II Soul tracks to you all :)

Michael Jackson Instrumental Collection

I got this CD in 1990 or 1991. It’s a Japanese import … instrumental versions of selected Michael Jackson tracks. Since today/tonight is Halloween, I’ve decided to share the instrumental version of Thriller. So many other elements can he heard in this one, which otherwise weren’t as audible when buried under so many layers of vocals. There’s something new to get out of this instrumental than the vocal version. Listen to both and make comparisons.

And of course, why not watch the full-length 14-minute version of Thriller music video in HD. At this video’s 07:16 mark in the timeline … MJ & Zombie Crew start doing their dance moves to Thriller’s breakdown groove … gives me the goose bumps … I jizz in my pants. It is Halloweekend after all — and Thriller still remains to be one of the best music videos of all time, terrorizing your neighborhood. This is the Michael Jackson I once knew.

The following is a personal global message to a friend of mine:
